Built in 1887, Livermore Valley’s Ruby Hill winery successfully produced wines in California’s ‘other’ wine region for nearly a century.   The original winery was ruined in a fire in November, 1989 and has now risen from the ashes at its new location at the corner of Isabel and Stanley Avenue (where Stony Ridge Winery was previously located.) Owners Mike and Sharon Callahan brought experienced winemaker Chris Graves on board to continue producing some of the finest varieties this region has to offer, to including zinfandels, chardonnays and merlots,.  Relax by the fountain on the patio….or enjoy a picnic overlooking the pastoral vineyards.  Entertain your palate with the delectable selection of gourmet cheeses and meats…and celebrate the newest addition to our very own award winning wine country.

Grand Opening festivities took place last weekend, and complimentary tastings will continue through the month .  Tasting room hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The winery is located at 400 Vineyard Avenue, Pleasanton, 94566; 925-931-WINE (9463).    Ruby Hill Winery

So what exactly is the ‘correct’ way to utilize the green waste cart for weekly garbage pickup? Because food scraps and food-soiled paper comprise 35% of the waste in Alameda County, it is important to remember that food scraps are not a waste but a resource.  Participation in the food scrap recycling program allows the scraps to instead be deposited at a composting facility and bypass the landfill.  Compost is used by farmers and landscapers alike, and is one more way to do our part to help the environment.

What to do?  Use paper containers like ice cream cartons, milk cartons, take-out containers, pizza boxes or paper bags to collect the scraps.  Dispose of the container into your green yard waste cart.

What qualifies as scraps?  Meat and fish;  leftovers and table scraps; food-soiled paper; fruits, vegetables, breads, cereal, dairy and pretty much all food products; and coffee grounds, filters and tea bags.  Don’t forget your grass and weed clippings; leaves, plants and flowers; and shrubs/tree trimmings that are less than 4″ in diameter.

What NOT to do?  DON’T include any plastic, liquids, metal or glass; (this means plastic bags, too!), no dirt or rocks; and no household garbage.  Changing your habits now can make a difference in everyone’s future.  For more information, visit www.StopWaste.org.

Inventory may be on the market for a while longer than last year or the year before, but properties are still selling.  Realistic pricing, condition, staging & location are important factors, and a small dose of patience is key.

It’s a GREAT time to invest in real estate, as interest rates are most favorable (STILL LOW!!!); there is more inventory to choose from and buyers now have time to make an informed decision.

The Alameda County Fairgrounds is where the action will be this Saturday, February 9th, as the Pleasanton Lions Club hosts their outragously popular ‘Mega’ Crab Feed fundraiser. Hundreds of crab lovers return every year to feast like royalty on crab legs, bread and ‘no host’ cocktails. Limber guests dance to the live entertainment or bid on the raffle & silent auction items like sports memorabilia, gift baskets, beauty treatments and romantic getaways.

Proceeds from this event allow the club to support a good number of worthy causes, continuing a tradition that was started in this Pleasanton chapter 77 years ago. One area of focus for the club is the goal of curing preventable blindness. As a result, the club collects and distributes used eyeglasses; offers free eye care to those in need and supports two centers for the blind in the Bay Area.

We look forward to attending this memorable event for the 4th year in a row. We enjoy running into the ‘Movers and Shakers’ from within the community…from our clients to our accountant, to fellow real estate agents, politicians, teachers, members of the law enforcement community, friends and neighbors… The motto of the Lions Club is ‘We Serve’, and serve they do! We appreciate all of the grand efforts put forth by these remarkable club members, as the energy and manpower required to put on an event of this magnitude is nearly incalculable. Bring on the crab legs….and don’t forget the butter.

Pleasanton’s own shining basketball star, Kevin Laue, was invited to meet President Bush at San Francisco International Airport during Air Force One’s brief stopover in the Bay Area on Wednesday, January 30th.  The 6′10″ senior at Amador High School is the starting center for the Dons, and with his shocking red hair and infectious grin, he is hard to miss.  Kevin and his parents enjoyed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity after being invited by the President who had learned about Kevin’s achievements and life skills through a relative of Kevin’s best friend, who works at the White House for the administration.

Kevin and his fellow teammates of the Amador High School Varsity Basketball Team take on cross-town rivals, the Foothill Falcons, in their final game of the season next week Friday, February 15th at 7:00 p.m. at the Amador High School gymnasium.  The competition is guaranteed to be as close as this year’s Super Bowl- Get there early if you’d like a seat.
